An obsessed ex has been seized by police after the horrifically decomposed body of his former girlfriend was discovered under the floorboards of his home.

Victim Asahi Okazaki, 20, had been missing for five months after filing nine complaints with police in Kawasaki, central Japan, that her ex Hideyuki Shirai was stalking her.

In one haunting last text to her mother, she said: "He's nearby. I might end up dead."

Asahi's corpse was so badly decomposed by the time police found her that her bones were showing through her rotted flesh.

She had been stiffed into a suitcase which was then sealed in a cabinet and buried under Shirai's floorboards.

It was so badly disfigured she could only be identified by dental records and DNA testing.

Police say it is unknown if burns found on her corpse came from torture before she died or a botched attempt to incinerate her body.

Asahi was arrested at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on 3rd May after returning from a trip to the USA accused of abandoning a corpse.

He has admitted hiding her body but police have yet to establish just how she died.

The pair had originally met in a bar where Asahi worked but she broke off the romance because of Shirai's violent behaviour, her family says.

The case has sparked public outrage over the police's handling of Asahi's desperate calls for help.

Police claim they took "appropriate" action based on Asahi's descriptions of the threat she faced.

But her furious father Tetsuya Okazaki said: "Everything the officers said was false.

"I believe my daughter died because the investigation was flawed. I will never forgive the police."
