A woman pregnant with twins gave birth to the two babies in two different states 14 days apart in an exceptionally rare case.

The unusual births took place in South Africa, with the first twin born at Kuruman Hospital in the Northern Cape on 27th March, while the second twin was delivered at the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein on 10th April.

Sadly, it was confirmed on Sunday, 13th April, that the second twin had died.

Free State Department of Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi told local media: "The sad development is that the second baby twin born at Universitas Academic Hospital passed away."

Twins are usually born just minutes apart but sometimes, in rare cases, they can be born on different days.

Professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of the Free State Ray Maharaj said: "It's rare and you don't see it often."

The delayed delivery of the twins is known as an "interval delivery", with the expert saying that the mother, not named, is in hospital receiving treatment.

He said that it was likely that the patient had gone into preterm labour, which is when labour begins before the baby has completely developed.

The doctor said: "Preterm labour occurs before 37 completed weeks. In these patients, we usually find they go into preterm labour between six to six-and-a-half months. What can happen is one can be delivered because the mother is in labour.”

He said that a number of reasons could have caused this, including a rupture of membranes or a weakening of the cervix.

It is currently unclear what caused the pregnant women to go into labour early.
