  • A 33-year-old mother died following a caesarean section after allegedly being denied her initial request for the procedure, with her family accusing the hospital of negligence.

Amanda Porfirio da Silva, who was 39 weeks pregnant, was admitted to Hospital dos Estivadores in the Encruzilhada neighbourhood of Santos, a city on the coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil, on 12th April.

Upon admission, 33-year-old Amanda requested a caesarean section, but doctors reportedly denied the request, stating she was not yet in labour.

Instead, labour was induced for a natural birth, despite Amanda's insistence on a caesarean section.

The following day, 13th April, Amanda underwent a caesarean section, during which bleeding was detected and controlled.

On 14th April, around 10 am, Amanda informed her husband, Thiago Rodrigo Pereira Jusis, that she was experiencing bleeding and needed to return to the operating room.

When Thiago arrived at the hospital in the afternoon, he found his wife intubated and suffering from lung failure.

Due to the severity of the bleeding, Amanda was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she remained for 10 days.

    Amanda died on 24th April.

The case was registered as a suspicious death at the 4th Police District of Santos, and an investigation has been initiated.

In an open letter to Brazilian newspaper Metropoles, Thiago expressed his grief, stating that his wife's wish for a caesarean section was not respected, leading to complications.

He described Amanda as a healthy, hardworking mother of two who entered the hospital smiling and without complications.

The family's lawyer, Lucas Porpora, announced plans to request medical documentation for expert analysis and to file a complaint with the Regional Medical Council of the State of Sao Paulo (CREMESP).

Legal action seeking compensation for material and moral damages is also being considered.

The Santos Health Department stated that all maternal and infant deaths are investigated by the city's Maternal and Infant Mortality Surveillance Section.

Hospital dos Estivadores expressed regret over Amanda's death and claimed that Amanda initially consented to a natural birth, and during labour, requested a caesarean section, which was promptly performed.

The hospital reported that all measures were taken to control the bleeding during the surgery and that Amanda was monitored in the surgical centre before being transferred to the ICU.

Despite these efforts, Amanda did not survive the consequences of haemorrhagic shock.

    The investigation is ongoing.
