HIGH SEIZE: Lost At Sea Crooks Who Stole Yacht Arrested After Calling Coastguard

Hapless crooks who stole a EUR 100,000 yacht from a posh marina were seized when they got hopelessly lost at sea and had to call the coastguard to be rescued.

The homeless pair had pinched the 40-foot sailing boat from Majorca's smart San Antonio de la Playa harbour in Can Pastilla at night on 20th April and headed out to sea.

But by the next day on 21st April, the thieves had reportedly drifted 25 kilometres close to Cabrera Island on the way to Africa's north coast.

Images released by the Spanish Coast Guard show the becalmed yacht miles out to sea with an armed officer standing guard over it.

The police later identified the crooks only as two Spanish men aged 53 and 59, who are now facing theft charges.

The vessel, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40, was recovered, according to local media reports, which said that homelessness was a growing problem in Majorca.

Reports drew parallels between the incident and a major housing shortage hitting the island as high rents and the legal holiday rentals exacerbate the problem.
