A woman bitten by a deadly spider whose venom literally dissolves human flesh died when she was unable to get quick treatment because the hospital was overcrowded.

The victim, named as 31-year-old María Fernanda Vazquez Mora, died in Guaymas, in the Mexican state of Sonora, after being bitten on 25th April.

Her family said that she had been standing in her garden when she felt the spider bite her.

She was rushed to hospital by her father, but she did not receive treatment fast enough because the facility was overcrowded, according to Mexican media.

The family waited patiently for her to be treated, but her condition worsened, and she suffered cardiac arrest.

By the time doctors reached it was too late, and she was declared dead.

The spider was identified as a brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) spider, which is the most dangerous spider in North America, along with the black widow (Latrodectus).

Her remains were laid to rest at the San Fernando Funeral Home in Guaymas, according to local media.

The family said in a statement: "We deeply regret your passing. Your memory will live forever in our hearts. Your family and friends will always remember your love and kindness."

A bite from a brown recluse spider can cause death because its venom dissolves tissue and causes cell death, known as necrosis.

The Mexican Ministry of Health said that this spider's venom contains powerful enzymes that destroy everything containing protein, and its effect is 10 times more powerful than a sulfuric acid burn.

Health experts recommend that, if bitten by this spider, the victim needs to act quickly by applying ice and a cold compress bandage to the wound and, if possible, washing the area with soap and water, in addition to going to the nearest health centre.

The brown recluse spider is a nocturnal species that adapts to any ecosystem. It likes to hide in dark corners during the day, emerging from them to hunt at night.

Its activity increases on hot summer nights.
