This is the shocking moment a curious child really does get his fingers burned as he tries to stuff a coin into an electric car's charging port.

CCTV footage from the family home in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, shows the youngster alone in the front yard apparently fascinated by the car on 29th April.

After managing to open the flap over the EV's charging point he tries to shove a coin in it like a vending machine.

Instantly there is a puff of smoke and the sobbing boy running back to his front door with his right hand blackened by the shock as his family comforts him.

The boy, who looks no older than three, was rushed to hospital by his parents but went home the same day after treatment.

Footage of the blast was shared widely on Chinese social media, including a video posted on the microblogging website Weibo.

Some social media users criticised parents and car makers.

One said: "Parents need to be more vigilant. Children are naturally curious, and EV chargers are not toys."

Another said: "This is a wake-up call for manufacturers to design child-proof charging ports."

And a third said: "Glad the child is okay. But this could have been much worse."
