Everyone knows this iconic painting Young Hare by German artist Albrecht Dürer, but it is less well known that he also designed other artworks.
And now a forgotten statue planned by the artist has finally been built some 500 years after he designed it.

The seven-metre-high (23-foot) statue was designed five centuries ago by the polymath and painter Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528), but it was never built during his lifetime.
Duerer, best known for his iconic Young Hare watercolour (1502), was a prominent artist during the German Renaissance and was in contact with a number of leading artists of the day in Italy, notably Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci.

The so-called "Peasant Column" was designed in 1525 by the German artist for a textbook, but it ended up being forgotten about.
Now, 500 years later, the statue has been erected in Muehlhausen, in the German state of Thuringia.

The forgotten Duerer monument depicts peasant tools, sheaves, a chicken coop, and jugs. At the top, a beaten peasant crouches on a pot of lard, his back pierced by a sword.
The memorial column commemorates how the peasants rose up against the authorities and fought against oppression and serfdom.
To mark the 500th anniversary of the Peasants' War, in which Muehlhausen is playing a central role with the state exhibition 'Freedom 1525 – 500 Years of the Peasants' War' starting 26th April, the 'Friends of Muehlhausen Museums' put forward the idea of a "Duerer for Muehlhausen" statue.
The man behind the project, Dr Michael Scholl, 63, said that "donations came from all over Germany."

The total cost of the statue is EUR 250,000 (GBP 213,000).
Local artist Timm Kregel, 68, from Gorsleben, who created the bronze column following Duerer's design, said: "The master was Duerer, I just implemented it."
