Husband and wife teachers died with their nine-year-old twin daughters in a horror motorway smash when their car piled into the back of a parked truck.

The family had been on their way home from a church service in Monte Alegre de Minas, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, when their car veered off the road into the trailer truck.

Police identified the parents as mum Luciene Padilha de Aquino Campos, 45, and 35-year-old dad Richard Henrique Pereira Campos and their daughters as Raissa and Melissa.

A passenger who was travelling with them and has not been named also died in the crash.

The police believe Luciene had fallen asleep at the wheel and had ploughed into the back of the parked truck in the 13th April crash.

Horrific police images from the crash site show the family's car crushed to almost half its size in the high-speed smash.

The Minas Gerais Fire Department say the family was killed instantly in the crash and the fifth victim died at the roadside.

The trailer driver told police he had parked his HGV on the side of the road to check the tyres and was hit just seconds later.

Luciene’s brother told local media: "She was a person who gave a lot without asking for anything in return."
