This is the moment a van that smashed through a roadside guardrail is left hanging on the edge of a cliff, dozens of metres above a drop, with the lone driver climbing out unhurt.

The incident happened on the G318 National Highway in Bome County, Nyingchi, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, on 8th February.

Video shared online shows the small passenger vehicle resting precariously at the cliff’s edge after breaking through the metal barrier on a snow-covered mountain road.

The footage captures the van tilted towards the drop, with a sheer ravine stretching below it.

Witness Mr Tao told reporters that he was travelling along the G318 highway towards Ranwu Lake when he saw the vehicle had crashed through the guardrail and come to a stop at the edge of the cliff.

“There is a cliff below. It was a close call. When we passed by, there was no one inside the vehicle,” he said.

Online posts accompanying the video described the drop as being dozens of metres deep.

On the morning of 10th February, staff at the Bome County Public Security Bureau confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.

They said there had been only one person in the vehicle at the time of the crash and that after the van came to a stop, the driver got out by himself.

Police added that the vehicle was later lifted away by a recovery truck arranged through the insurance company and that the damage was not serious.
