A military police sergeant with 35 years’ service has been punished with three days of detention after his moustache was ruled to be "too long" under strict uniform regulations.

Second Sergeant Samuel de Araujo Lima was sanctioned after an inspection found his moustache extended beyond the line of his lower lip, which is against the rules set by the Pernambuco Military Police in Brazil.

The punishment was recorded in an internal police bulletin on 13th January, but was only made public on 27th January.

Supervisors noticed the size of Lima's moustache during a check carried out while the sergeant was working an extra paid shift.

According to the police, the sanction is based on Supplementary Norm No. 68, issued on 26th October 2020, which strictly regulates personal presentation standards for state military police officers.

Lima, who is assigned to the Independent Tourist Support Company in Olinda, appealed the decision, arguing through his lawyer that he has worn the same moustache for years without ever being challenged.

His defence stated: "He is considered a hero, has been with the force for 35 years, and has always been known for his large moustache."

Police confirmed that the punishment is an administrative detention carried out within military facilities and does not remove the sergeant from active service.

The punishment has not yet been served, and Lima was forced to trim his facial hair in the meantime.

The appeal process is ongoing, and the sergeant continues to perform his duties while the case is reviewed.
