A dad-of-one musician who worked at a marble shop was crushed to death by a tonne of marble that fell on him while he was trying to show it to a client.

Jean Carlos Mangeronio de Freitas was working at a marble business when the incident occurred in the city of Tubarao, in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, on 19th January.

According to the Military Fire Brigade, Jean was moving a marble slab from a display to show it to a customer when the structure gave way and multiple slabs fell on top of him.

The pieces of marble involved weighed an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 kilogrammes.

People at the scene used a mechanical jack to lift the slabs before emergency services arrived.

Firefighters and paramedics from the Mobile Emergency Care Service attended the scene and provided medical assistance.

During treatment, Jean went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aside from his job at the marble shop, Jean was also a professional musician.

He performed at bars, restaurants, and various events such as weddings. In January alone, he still had six performances scheduled in the municipalities of Laguna and Tubarao.

He was also the father of a child just over one year old.

Police said the death was recorded as a workplace accident.

Civil Police and forensic officers attended to carry out technical examinations and legal procedures.
