A doctor who said his wife and son died when their car plunged into a river has been arrested after police revealed she sent a message saying she was being threatened.

The crash happened in Bafra, a district in Samsun Province in northern Turkey, on 12th September.

The car driven by psychiatrist Serdar Kiyak veered off the road and dropped about 100 feet into the Kizilirmak River.

His wife Gulsah Karaman Kiyak, 31, and their three-year-old son died in the crash, which the doctor claimed he had only narrowly survived by jumping out of the vehicle before it crashed.

Kiyak escaped from the vehicle with only minor injuries.

Investigators later uncovered that shortly before the accident, his wife had sent a message to her family saying: "He's threatening me."

Kiyak was taken into custody and brought before a court.

He was ordered to be held on suspicion of deliberately killing his wife and child.

Authorities said the investigation is continuing.
