A Jewish couple have been attacked by a group of men shouting 'Free Palestine' in Italy, who threw a glass bottle at them and used a Rottweiler to attack them.

The assault reportedly happened on Strada Nuova near the church of Santa Fosca in Venice, on the night between 7th and 8th September.

The couple, an American man and his Israeli wife, had been getting drinks at a kiosk when around 10 men of North African origin began hurling insults at them.

The 31-year-old Tunisian at the centre of the abuse slapped the man after pretending to offer him his hand.

Another man reportedly set his unmuzzled Rottweiler on the couple.

As the tourists tried to leave, the group continued to surround them and insult them.

A glass bottle was then thrown at the couple, shattering on the ground and cutting the woman’s ankle.

Officers from the Guardia di Finanza intervened and later patrols from the Venice Police Headquarters identified and reported the suspects.

The prosecutor’s office has opened a file for aggravated threats and violence based on religion, nationality, and ethnicity.

The Tunisian man was also charged with battery and ordered not to return to Venice for two years.

Another man with pending proceedings was issued an expulsion order and taken to the Repatriation Centre in Bari.

Both men have appointed lawyers.
