This is the moment a stray moggy wanders into the big cats' enclosure at a zoo and is mauled to death by a tiger.

The incident happened at Xining Wildlife Park in Qinghai Province, China, on 25th August.

Video shared online shows the tiger with the cat in its mouth as horrified visitors gasp in shock as they watch from the enclosure’s edge.

Some visitors initially mistook the animal for a tiger cub before its meow confirmed it was a stray cat.

Zoo officials said staff quickly responded to the scene and disposed of the cat’s body safely.

They confirmed that the animal was a stray and not brought into the park by a visitor.

Zookeepers reportedly tried to intervene and guide the tiger away but were unable to rescue the cat in time.

The zoo admitted that gaps in the enclosure walls and the number of cats and dogs in nearby villages allow strays to enter the park.

Management said they have sterilised stray cats in the past and are now holding meetings to discuss further measures to prevent animals entering the enclosures.

Officials confirmed the tiger involved was a young male in good health with no dietary or nutritional issues.

The zoo announced it will continue health monitoring of the tiger and publish the results of its safety review after internal discussions are complete.
