A brother and sister aged nine and six have been found by horrified police living wild on a remote farm cut off from the outside world.

The pair have never been toilet trained and still wear nappies and are unable to communicate except through their own primitive language.

Their parents never registered them with health officials or schools and the siblings were said to be "filthy" when astonished police stumbled across them.

Local media reports say their father claimed he was homeschooling the children, but neither of them can read or write.

Photographs of the ramshackle farm show broken and abandoned furniture, a derelict trampoline and rubbish strewn across the garden.

The reclusive family was only discovered in Lauriano, northern Italy, when police arrived at their hillside farm to evacuate them after a flooding alert.

Local media reports on 30th June say their 54-year-old sculptor father and 38-year-old mother are both Dutch nationals.

The Turin Juvenile Court ordered the immediate removal of the children from their parents.

It said in its ruling: "There are facts that suggest that the minors are deprived of adequate assistance from their parents or relatives who are required to provide it."

The children have been taken into state care while arrangements are made for them to be taken into foster care.

Local mayor Mara Baccolla said: "It is a very delicate matter. These children can finally find a balance and have access to a life worthy of the name."

It is unclear if the parents face further action.
