A doctor called to treat a woman in the emergency room for severe abdominal pain was shocked to discover she was pregnant and already in labour.

Dr Lise Oliveira was on duty at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Brotas, Salvador, Brazil, on Monday, 9th June, when 28-year-old Iria Nilza Soares Nascimento arrived complaining of intense cramps.

However, upon examination, Dr Oliveira quickly realised the patient was in an advanced stage of labour and called in the team to assist with the delivery.

She said the news of the imminent birth came as a complete surprise, even to the mother. Before the birth, she and Iria took a moment to pray together for a safe delivery — and minutes later, a healthy baby girl was born.

Following the successful delivery, mother and baby were safely transferred by SAMU (Emergency Medical Service) to the Bahia Perinatology Institute (IPERBA), where both are reportedly doing well.

Doctors at the unit noted a growing trend of women giving birth without realising they were pregnant. This marks the third such case at the Brotas emergency unit this year, where a patient arrived with abdominal pain and left with a newborn.
