A 10-year-old boy who grazed his knees after falling off a skateboard has had both his legs amputated following a rare infection.

Joseph Bressan, from the city of Pato Branco in the Brazilian state of Parana, was taken to hospital with what appeared to be minor scrapes on his knees in 2023 when he was eight years old.
But the injuries quickly became infected and developed into sepsis, forcing doctors to amputate both legs to save his life.
The infection was caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria.
Despite initial treatment, Joseph's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a 20 per cent chance of survival.
The infection necessitated the use of vasoconstrictor medications, which unfortunately led to tissue necrosis in his limbs and other areas.
His mother Josiane Bressan told local media on 23rd May: "He suffered a lot in the beginning."
She added that what began as a simple fall turned into a nightmare for the whole family.
During Joseph's hospital stay, Josiane discovered she was pregnant with their second child.
The unexpected news added to the family's emotional and financial strain.
Locals in the town have now launched a campaign to help raise BRL 50,000 (GBP 6,530) towards the cost of prosthetics and rehabilitation.
The fundraiser, called Dia D do Joseph - or Joseph’s D-Day - featured a solidarity walk, food sales, and musical performances.
Joseph, who is recovering in hospital, has told his family he wants to return to school and continue with his education.
His journey is being shared through his Instagram account, which is being managed by family and friends.
Joseph's case has drawn national attention in Brazil, with many offering donations and support.
