This is the macabre moment a husband is caught on CCTV cameras dumping his former wife's body in the boot of a car before tossing her in a piranha-infested river.

Accused Carlos Eduardo de Souza Ribeiro later confessed to throttling his ex and dumping her body in the Tiete River in Osasco, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The grim footage, recorded in the early hours of 20th May, shows Ribeiro, 35, and his brother carrying 31-year-old victim Amanda Caroline de Almeida's corpse in a sheet.

As they manhandle it to a nearby parked car, they bundle the body into the boot and drive off to throw it into the river.

The night before (19th May), say police, Ribeiro, who has confessed to the killing, has throttled his wife for refusing to go back to him after splitting two months ago.

Friends told local media that six weeks earlier Ribeiro had brutally beaten Amanda for leaving him but she refused to report him to police to avoid upsetting their three children.

Ribeiro was arrested on 21st May and his 38-year-old brother, who has not been named, a day later (22nd May).

Amanda's body has still not been recovered.

Only months ago 15 swimmers had to flee the river covered in blood when they were attacked by a school of flesh-eating piranha fish.

The police said in a statement: "Two men have been arrested in for femicide and concealment of a corpse.

"The search continues to locate the victim's body."

Amanda was being driven home from a night out on the night she died and saw her ex's car parked outside her home.

She asked to be dropped off at further away and walked home believing he would be gone but was never seen again.

The couple's three children aged 17, seven and five are being cared for by relatives.
