Argentina’s President Javier Milei accused a journalist of intentionally striking him in the nose with a microphone during a chaotic press scrum.

The incident occurred on 18th May when Milei had cast his ballot in the local elections in Buenos Aires outside the National Technological University (UTN).

As he descended the steps, surrounded by journalists and security, a microphone held by C5N reporter Diego Lewen made contact with his face.

Visibly irritated, Milei pointed at the journalist and said (in Spanish): "You hit me on purpose."

Lewen responded: "Me?", as the president’s security team moved in to separate them.

The moment was captured on video and quickly spread across social media, igniting debate over whether the contact was accidental or deliberate.

C5N is known for its critical stance toward Milei’s administration.

The president has previously accused journalists of bias and corruption, referring to them as "hitmen with press credentials."

This latest confrontation adds to the ongoing tension between Milei and certain media outlets.

Milei, a former economist and television pundit, rose to power in 2023 on a wave of populist rhetoric and promises to slash public spending.

He has described himself as an "anarcho-capitalist" and frequently rails against what he calls the "political caste".

He once brought a chainsaw on stage during his campaign to symbolise his vow to cut government waste.

He has said climate change is a lie, and has branded the Pope a "filthy leftist".

He keeps cloned mastiffs named after economists, claims to speak to God through his dead dog Conan, and has called for legalising the sale of human organs.

His government has pushed sweeping economic reforms, including massive cuts to subsidies and public sector jobs, which have sparked protests and widespread criticism.
