The father and brother of El Chapo's wife Emma Coronel have won a legal battle to block their extradition to the United States.

The ruling was made in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, earlier this week (May).

Ines Coronel Barreras and his son Ines Omar Coronel Aispuro, accused of being high-ranking members of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, were granted a provisional suspension by a Mexican federal judge.

The court decision means neither man can be immediately handed over to US authorities.

The suspension was granted on the grounds that there is no formal extradition request yet filed by the US government.

Barreras, 56, and his son Aispuro were sentenced to 10 years in a Mexican prison for drug trafficking in 2017.

They were arrested in 2013 in the state of Sonora alongside other alleged Sinaloa Cartel members.

Authorities said at the time they seized two rifles, four handguns, and 250kg (551lbs) of marijuana.

Both men are linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, which was headed by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who is serving a life sentence in the US.

They were accused of coordinating marijuana plantations and drug trafficking shipments across the Mexico-United States border in Arizona.

El Chapo’s wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, was herself jailed for nearly three years in the US before being released in 2023.
