A man was hospitalised after allegedly being savagely beaten by a gang of Arabic-looking men who asked him if he was a Muslim and then attacked him when he said he had been baptised a Christian.

The shocking attack happened in the German capital of Berlin, at around 10:45pm on Monday, 19th May.

The 24-year-old victim was walking when he was approached by the five men who he said demanded to know if he was a Muslim.

When he replied that he had been baptised a Christian, the gang insulted him over his Christian faith before allegedly attacking him.

They reportedly kicked him on the head repeatedly until he collapsed in the street.

Passerby found him lying unconscious with horrific injuries and alerted local authorities.

Emergency services took him to hospital, where he received treatment for facial injuries.

Berlin police said officers from the state security division were now investigating the incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. They told local media they were looking for the attackers who were described as "Arabic".

No weapons were reported to have been used during the attack.

The attackers fled the scene and had not been identified by Wednesday, police confirmed.
