A grandmother was savaged by a Pitbull as she threw herself between the beast and her 18-month-old granddaughter in a terrifying home attack.

The horror unfolded in the town of Caiaponia, in the state of Goias, Brazil, on 8th May.

The woman, aged 46, managed to lock the child in a bedroom and slam the front door shut as the dog attacked her legs, arms, and face.

She had carried the child in her arms while trying to fend off the animal with the other until reaching the room.

After placing the baby on the bed, she continued to keep the dog away until she managed to lock it outside.

The dog pressed her against a glass door, which shattered and caused additional injuries.

She passed out in the living room shortly afterwards, unable to get up due to blood loss and trauma.

Police were called by neighbours and had to break down the front door to reach her.

Bystanders attempted to help but gave up when they reportedly saw how big and aggressive the Pitbull was.

The dog had to be shot and killed by officers after it attacked them during the rescue, the police said.

The woman received over 60 stitches from bites and cuts caused by broken glass.

She was hospitalised for two days and discharged on 10th May.

She is now recovering at home.

The baby was unharmed.

According to the police, the same dog, which was apparently the family pet, had previously attacked another person in 2023.
