This is the bizarre aftermath of a lorry crash that sent thousands of litres of bright blue dye gushing into a stream turning all the wildlife vivid turquoise.

The tanker had smashed into an electricity pole near Jundai, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil on 13th May and burst open releasing the concentrated colourant, normally used on egg cartons.

The contents leaked into the Corrego das Tulipa waterway, or Tulip Stream, quickly flowing into a wildlife haven known as Tulip Garden.

Shocking footage filmed by environmental workers show ducks and geese turned a vivid blue by the dye being rounded up for rescue and cleaning.

And although the manufacturers claim the dye is non-toxic, scores of dead blue fish were found floating on the surface.

Experts also fear for the safety of local capybara, giant relatives of domestic guinea pigs, which swim in the stream and graze on its aquatic greenery.

Sao Paolo Wildlife rescue experts CETESB told local media: "The impact of dye in the stream altered the characteristics of the water, such as its colour, and fish deaths were observed.

"The environmental impact is great, but we have tried to mitigated it by containing the substance.

"As the stream flows into the Jundiai River, the dye has already arrived there.

"There were about 2,000 litres of dye dumped into the water. We are working to reduce the impact on animals."

Dye manufacturers Farkon Industria e Comercio Chemical have refused to comment on the disaster.

But local media reports say the trucker was out of his cab when the vehicle rolled into the power pole.
