A woman who was running for town mayor has been fatally shot during a campaign caravan when an armed group ambushed her vehicle on her way to meet local supporters.
The attack on Yesenia Lara Gutierrez occurred in the town of Texistepec, in the southern part of Veracruz state, Mexico, as her team was broadcasting the procession live on Facebook on 11th May.
She was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.
Witnesses claim that at least eight men participated in the armed attack.
The incident was captured on video, which has since circulated widely on social media.
Lara Gutierrez, a native of Texistepec, previously served as municipal agent in the community of Las Camelias and as a former municipal trustee.
She was also the widow of Enrique Arguelles Montero, a former councilman who was assassinated in 2022 in the nearby municipality of Acayucan.
Rocio Nahle, governor of Veracruz, regretted the incident in a statement saying: "No position or office is worth a person's life.
"We will find those responsible for this cowardly murder."

He added that the attack left three more dead and at least three more injured.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
Authorities have not yet identified any suspects.
The killing adds to a series of violent incidents targeting political figures in the region ahead of the upcoming local elections.
