A colossal amber-coloured diamond weighing 468.30 carats (93.66 grammes) has been unearthed in Russia, marking the largest gem-quality diamond ever found in the country.

The discovery was announced by ALROSA, Russia's leading diamond mining company, on 8th May.

The diamond measures 56 by 54 by 22 millimetres (2.20 x 2.13 x 0.87 inches) and was extracted from the company's deposits in the Arctic region of Yakutia.

In a statement, ALROSA CEO Pavel Marinychev highlighted the symbolic significance of the find coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a term used in Russia to describe the end of World War II.

Pavel Marinychev said: "It is symbolic that it was found in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.

"Therefore, we decided to name it in honour of such a significant event for our entire country."

Earlier in April, ALROSA presented the "New Sun," the largest cut diamond in Russian history, weighing over 100 carats.

The cutting process took more than two years, and the golden-honey-coloured treasure, mined from Arctic deposits, is set to be auctioned soon.
